Sagging breasts that have lost their shape or volume can be the result of a variety of factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, the natural effects of aging, genetics, or gravity. A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, can help breasts sit higher on the chest while appearing and feeling more youthful and firm.
Are you a good candidate?
If you having sagging breasts, breasts that are stretched, one breast that sits lower than the other, or nipples that point downward, you are a good candidate for a breast lift. First you need to be sure you are in general good health, don’t smoke, and have maintained a stable weight.
Getting a breast lift
Your breast lift surgery is an outpatient procedure and generally takes about three hours to complete. Before your procedure, you will likely meet with the surgeon, nursing staff, and anesthesiologist. You will be sedated or receive general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will lift, trim, and tighten your skin and breast tissue. Some patients also choose to get breast implants during a breast lift
After your breast lift surgery, you cannot do any heavy lifting for about a month and a half. Make sure you enlist the help of a family member or friend if you have small children. It is normal to feel uncomfortable after your surgery. To help with this, your doctor will typically suggest a certain type of bra and painkiller to help you feel more at ease.
In the future, you may choose to get a “touch up” breast lift procedure to enhance the look of your breasts. A second breast lift is rarely needed.
Insurance and breast lifts
Health insurance does not normally cover a cosmetic procedure like a breast lift. If you are receiving a breast lift as part of mastectomy reconstruction, you may qualify for coverage. Make sure you always check with your insurance provider to clarify your benefits and coverage.
